FAQ
1. What is the difference between granite, quartz, marble and quartzite?
Answer:
-
Granite: Granite is a natural stone known for its strength and durability. It is resistant to heat, scratches, and stains (when properly sealed). Available in a wide range of colors and patterns, granite offers a unique, natural beauty with every slab.
-
Quartz: Quartz is an engineered stone made from natural quartz crystals mixed with resins and pigments. This gives it a non-porous surface that’s resistant to stains, bacteria, and scratches. Quartz offers consistency in color and pattern and does not require sealing, making it a low-maintenance option. It is less heat-resistant than granite or quartzite, so it’s important to use trivets or hot pads.
-
Marble: Marble is another natural stone, famous for its elegance and luxurious appearance, with beautiful veining patterns. However, marble is softer and more porous than granite and quartz, making it more prone to scratches, stains, and etching, especially from acidic substances like citrus or wine. It requires more maintenance, including regular sealing and gentle cleaning.
-
Quartzite: Quartzite is a natural stone that combines the beauty of marble with the durability of granite. It’s highly heat-resistant, scratch-resistant, and more durable than marble but softer than granite. Quartzite often has stunning veining similar to marble, with colors ranging from white and gray to pink, blue, and gold.
Most of the stone we work with and keep in stock is 3cm which is equal to 1 1/4 inch, 2cm equal to 3/4 inch is also available upon request.

2. Which stone is best for my kitchen countertops?
Answer:
For kitchen countertops, granite, quartz, and quartzite are all excellent choices, each with their own benefits:
-
Granite: Granite is highly durable, resistant to heat, and scratches, making it ideal for active kitchens. It can handle high temperatures, making it perfect for cooking areas where hot pots and pans may be placed. It’s also available in a wide range of colors and patterns, giving you plenty of design options.
-
Quartz: Quartz is non-porous, which means it resists stains, bacteria, and mold. It’s an excellent choice for those who want a low-maintenance countertop that’s easy to clean. Since quartz is engineered, it also comes in a variety of consistent patterns and colors, making it a versatile and popular option for modern kitchens.
-
Quartzite: Quartzite offers the luxurious look of marble but with the durability of granite. It’s incredibly heat- and scratch-resistant, making it a great choice for kitchen countertops that will be exposed to heavy use. Although it’s more durable than marble, it still requires regular sealing to prevent stains and maintain its beauty. Quartzite is perfect for those looking for the elegant veining of marble with the toughness of granite.
-
Marble: While marble offers a classic, luxurious appearance, it is more prone to scratching and stainingcompared to granite or quartzite, so it requires more maintenance in the kitchen. It’s best for those willing to provide extra care and who love the timeless aesthetic marble brings.

5. How do I care for my granite, quartz, marble, or quartzite countertops?
Answer:
Proper care will keep your countertops looking beautiful and lasting for many years. Here's how to maintain each material:
-
Granite: Granite is durable but requires sealing to prevent stains and moisture absorption. We recommend cleaning with a mild soap and water solution. Avoid acidic cleaners or harsh chemicals.
-
Quartz: Quartz is non-porous and doesn't require sealing, making it very low-maintenance. Simply wipe it down with a damp cloth and mild soap. While it is resistant to stains, it’s best to clean spills immediately, especially from highly acidic substances like citrus or vinegar.
-
Marble: Marble is a softer stone and more porous, so it requires extra care. Clean with a gentle, pH-neutral cleaner and be sure to reseal the surface regularly to prevent stains from acidic substances like coffee, wine, or lemon juice. Be cautious with sharp objects as marble is more prone to scratching than granite or quartz.
-
Quartzite: Quartzite is a durable, natural stone similar to granite, but it is still porous, so it requires sealing to prevent stains. Clean with mild soap and water and avoid harsh chemicals. Although quartzite is heat-resistant, it’s still a good idea to use trivets or hot pads to protect the surface from extreme heat.

10. How long will my granite, quartz, marble, or quartzite countertop last?
Answer:
With proper care, your countertop can last for decades. Here's what you can expect from the lifespan of each material:
-
Granite: Granite is incredibly durable and can last 50+ years or even longer with proper maintenance. It’s resistant to heat, scratches, and general wear, making it one of the longest-lasting options for countertops.
-
Quartz: Quartz is an engineered stone, and while it is durable, it typically lasts around 25-30 years with proper care. It’s resistant to scratches, stains, and bacteria, but it’s not as heat-resistant as granite or quartzite.
-
Marble: Marble is a softer stone compared to granite and quartz, which means it may show wear over time. However, with regular maintenance marble countertops can last 30+ years. They require more attention to prevent scratching and staining, especially in high-use areas like kitchens.
-
Quartzite: Quartzite is a natural stone that’s harder and more durable than marble but not quite as durable as granite. With proper care, quartzite countertops can last 50+ years, making them a long-lasting option similar to granite. Quartzite is heat- and scratch-resistant and is ideal for high-traffic areas.

11. What is your warranty on countertops?
Answer:
Specific terms vary based on the stone type, installation and our suppliers warranty, but rest assured, we are committed to your satisfaction and will always stand behind our work.

12. Can I install granite, quartz, marble or quartzite myself?
Answer:
While it's technically possible to install countertops yourself, we highly recommend hiring a professional for the best results. The installation process involves precise measurements, cutting, and securing heavy materials, which require specialized tools and expertise. Professional installation ensures your countertops are safe, level, and look great, and it can prevent costly mistakes.

13. Do you offer custom designs or special orders?
Answer:
Absolutely! We specialize in custom designs to suit your unique style. Whether you're looking for a specific pattern, color, or edge profile, we can work with you to create a countertop that matches your vision. Additionally, we can source rare stones if you're looking for something truly one-of-a-kind.

14. Can I get a sample of the stone before I decide?
Answer:
Our suppliers often can provide a free sample or can have one shipped to your door. J&R Granite does not always have samples but if we have a sample to offer then yes we can offer you one so you can see and feel the material in your home or space before making your final decision. Seeing the stone in natural lighting and in context with your other elements is the best way to ensure you choose the right material.

15. What should I do if my granite, quartz, marble, or quartzite gets damaged?
Answer:
If your countertops get damaged, it's best to reach out to us for professional repair. Here’s how we handle repairs for each material:
-
Granite: Granite is a tough material, but if it gets chipped or cracked, it can often be repaired with resin or epoxy filler. Depending on the severity of the damage, repairs can restore the countertop to its original appearance.
-
Quartz: Quartz, being an engineered stone, may not be as easily repaired due to its resin content. Chips or cracks might not blend seamlessly, but we can discuss the best options for fixing it, such as replacing the damaged section or patching it with a matching resin.
-
Marble: Marble is softer and more prone to scratches and cracks. Minor damage such as chips can be filled and polished, but more significant cracks may need a full repair or resurfacing. Careful maintenance can help prevent these issues from occurring.
-
Quartzite: Quartzite is a hard natural stone, but like granite, it can also be repaired if it gets chipped or cracked. Repairs can be made with fillers that match the stone’s color and texture. Given quartzite’s hardness, repairs can often be very effective in restoring its beauty.

16. Are there any environmental benefits to choosing quartz over natural stone?
Answer:
Yes, quartz is often considered a more eco-friendly option compared to natural stones like granite, marble and quartzite. Since quartz is engineered from natural quartz crystals mixed with resin, it requires less energy to process and is generally more sustainable. Additionally, quartz countertops are non-porous, reducing the need for harsh chemicals during cleaning and maintenance.

17. Can I install granite, quartz, marble, or quartzite outdoors?
Answer:
Yes! Granite, quartz, marble, and quartzite are all great options for outdoor applications, though there are some key differences to consider:
-
Granite: Granite is one of the best options for outdoor use due to its natural durability. It’s resistant to weathering, UV rays, and extreme temperatures, making it an excellent choice for outdoor kitchens, barbecues, and tabletops.
-
Quartz: While quartz is a durable material, it is not recommended for direct outdoor use. Quartz is an engineered stone and can be damaged by UV exposure, which can cause discoloration over time. However, quartz can be used in shaded outdoor areas or as part of covered outdoor spaces.
-
Marble: Marble is a softer stone and more susceptible to the elements. It is not ideal for outdoor use in areas with extreme weather conditions, especially in direct sunlight or areas with high moisture. Marble can weather, stain, and deteriorate when exposed to the elements for long periods.
-
Quartzite: Quartzite is an excellent option for outdoor installations. Like granite, it is highly durable and resistant to UV rays, heat, and cold. Its dense and tough nature makes it an ideal choice for outdoor kitchens, countertops, and patios.
For outdoor spaces, we recommend granite and quartzite as the most suitable choices for countertops, bar areas, and other hardscape installations, as they will maintain their beauty and durability over time. If you’re looking for an outdoor countertop that will stand up to the elements, these materials are your best bet.

18. What do I need to do to prepare for countertop installation?
Answer:
To ensure a smooth installation process, please:
-
Clear the space: Make sure there’s enough room around the countertop area for our team to work.
-
Remove old countertops (if necessary): If we’re replacing existing countertops, please ensure they are removed beforehand. J&R Granite can also provide the removal and disposal service.
-
Ensure proper access: Make sure there’s clear access to your home so our team can bring in the materials without any issues. We’ll also provide any specific instructions when scheduling the installation.

19. How do I know if my cabinets are strong enough to support my new stone countertops?
Answer:
Granite, quartz, marble and quartzite are heavy materials, so it’s important to ensure that your cabinets are sturdy and properly supported. If you're unsure, we can assess your cabinets during the consultation and advise you on any necessary reinforcement. Proper support will prevent sagging or damage to your countertops over time.

20. Will my granite, quartz, marble, or quartzite countertops stain?
Answer:
Each of these materials has unique properties when it comes to staining, and proper care is key to keeping your countertops looking beautiful:
-
Granite: While granite is naturally resistant to stains, it is still porous, so it can absorb liquids if not sealed properly. If spills are cleaned up quickly, granite can hold up well against everyday use.
-
Quartz: Quartz is a non-porous material, meaning it won’t absorb liquids or stains, making it one of the easiest materials to maintain. However, it’s still important to clean up spills promptly to prevent any damage to the surface, especially from acidic substances like citrus.
-
Marble: Marble is more porous and softer than granite and quartz, which makes it more susceptible to stains, especially from acidic liquids like coffee, wine, and citrus. Regular sealing is essential, but even with sealing, marble requires extra care and maintenance to keep it looking pristine.
-
Quartzite: Quartzite is a dense and durable natural stone that is much more resistant to stains than marble. However, it is still somewhat porous and should be sealed to prevent potential staining. Quartzite’s natural beauty, with its stunning veining, can be maintained by cleaning up spills quickly.
J&R Granite seals all our natural stone with a 20 year sealer.

21. What are the most popular colors and patterns for countertops?
Answer:
The most popular colors and patterns vary by trend, but some classic favorites include:
-
Granite: Shades of gray, beige, and black, as well as unique patterns like "butterfly" and " natural granite veins."
-
Quartz: Colors like whites, blacks, and grays, as well as options mimicking marble veining or natural stone patterns.
-
Marble: Classic white with gray veining, as well as rich, dramatic colors like dark greens, blacks, or even red hues.
-
Quartzite: Quartzite offers the elegance of marble with the strength of granite. It typically comes in shades of white, gray, and beige, with dramatic veining patterns that resemble marble. Some quartzite varieties even come in stunning blues, greens, and reds.

22. Can I use my granite, quartz, marble and quartzite countertops for other projects?
Answer:
Absolutely! Many of our customers have used their granite, quartz, marble or quartzite countertops for various projects like backsplashes, fireplaces, and bar tops. These stones are versatile and can be customized to fit almost any application in your home.

23. What makes your granite, quartz, marble and quartzite different from others on the market?
Answer:
We take pride in offering premium quality materials, sourced from trusted quarries and manufacturers. Our stones are carefully selected for their aesthetic appeal, durability, and performance. Plus, our expert craftsmen ensure a customized fabrication and flawless installation, giving you peace of mind and a product that will stand the test of time.

24. Do you offer laser templating for countertop installations?
Answer:
Yes, we offer laser templating for all of our countertop installations! Laser templating is the most accurate and efficient method to capture precise measurements of your countertops. Using advanced laser technology, we create a digital template of your space, ensuring a perfect fit and reducing the chance for errors.

25. Can I cut directly on my countertop?
Answer:
We don’t recommend it. We can offer one cutting board per job of the same material for you to use how you'd like. While these materials are durable, your knives will thank you if you use a cutting board. Plus, cutting directly on the countertop can dull your knives over time—so give your blades a break and use a board!

26. Can I put hot pans on my marble or quartzite countertops?
Answer:
We wouldn’t recommend putting directly hot pans on any countertop—especially marble. Marble can be easily damaged by heat, and while quartzite and granite are more heat-resistant, trivets or hot pads are your best friends. Keep your counters looking beautiful (and your kitchen safe) by using something to protect the surface!

27. Can I use my granite countertop as a trampoline for my cat?
Answer:
While granite is durable and can handle a lot of wear and tear, we highly recommend you avoid using it as a trampoline—even for your fur baby! Our countertops are made for cooking, not acrobatics. Let your cat stick to their usual jump spots, and your countertops will stay in tip-top shape.

28. Will my countertop improve my cooking skills?
Answer:
We’d love to say that your new countertop will automatically turn you into a gourmet chef, but unfortunately, that’s up to you! While a beautiful countertop can certainly inspire your culinary creations, it’s still your skills that will make the meal. But hey, cooking on a gorgeous granite, quartz, or quartzite surface definitely adds some extra flavor to your kitchen experience.

29. Can my countertops help my kids with homework?
Answer:
If only! As beautiful and durable as your new countertop is, it’s probably not going to solve any math problems for them. But we’d like to think that a stylish and functional workspace might inspire creativity (or at least help them stay organized and focused). For homework problems, though, we recommend calculators and occasional parental assistance!

30. Can I use my countertop to play mini-golf?
Answer:
While stone countertops are tough, they weren’t designed with mini-golf in mind. We recommend leaving the golf balls to the golf course and your countertops to the culinary and aesthetic endeavors. Your countertop will thank you for it!

31. If I spill wine on my marble countertop, will it give me a glass of water in return?
Answer:
Oh, we wish! Unfortunately, your marble countertop is not equipped with magical powers. While marble is stunning, it does require a little extra care when it comes to spills. If you spill wine, it’s best to clean it up right away to avoid staining. No glass of water will appear, but you’ll still have a beautiful countertop to enjoy!

32. Can I host a party on my new countertops?
Answer:
We love a good party! And while stone countertops are durable enough to handle the occasional spill or snack spread, we recommend using your countertop for its intended purpose: preparing food, not hosting the actual event! But go ahead and make those snacks look extra fancy!
